Turn Off Indexing to Speed Up XP
Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then you may want to turn this feature off:

· Open My Computer.
· Right-click your hard drive icon and select Properties.
· At the bottom of the window you'll see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches," uncheck this and click ok.
· A new window will pop up and select Apply to all folders and subfolders.

It will take a minute or two for the changes to take affect but then you should enjoy slightly faster performance.

Clean Your Prefetch to Improve Performance

This is a unique technique for WinXP. We know that it is necessary to scrub registry and TEMP files for Win9X/ME/2000 periodically. Prefetch is a new and very useful technique in Windows XP. However, after using XP some time, the prefetch directory can get full of junk and obsolete links in the Prefetch catalog, which can slow down your computer noticeably.

· Open C(system drive):/windows/prefetch, delete those junk and obsolete files, reboot. It is recommended that you do this every month.

Remove Hibernation File

If you do not use hibernation, make sure you do not have it enabled, which reserves disk space equal to your RAM. If you have a hidden file on the root directory of your C-drive called hiberfil.sys, hibernation is enabled. To remove that file:

· Go to Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, Hibernate tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box.

Performance Increase Through My Computer

Easy enough tweak to usually find out about it on your own, but still, some of us still don't find it right away. So here it is:

· Start > right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
· Click on the "Advanced" tab.
· See the "Performance" section? Click "Settings".

Slow Start-up When Using Norton Internet Security 2002
If you are using Norton Internet Security 2002, and are experiencing slow start-up of XP, (i.e. you can see the desktop with icons etc. but it takes 30-60sec before you can start using the computer), this fix might help:

· Click on Start button.
· Select Control Panel.
· Open "Network Connections".
· Under "LAN and High-Speed Internet", right-click on your "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".
· Under "General" tab, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and select "Properties".
· Select "Use the following IP address:".
· Under "IP address" enter following : 192.168.0.1
· Under "Subnet Mask:" enter following : 255.255.255.0
· Click "Ok".

Correcting System Hang at Startup

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do:

· Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'.
· Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service.
· Disable it, apply the changes & reboot.

Disable XP Boot Logo

It is possible to disable the XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the overall boot process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ... ), but if your system runs without any problems then it should not matter.

· Edit boot.ini.
· Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect".

Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

Slow Network Access Not Always Due to Scheduled Tasks Check

If you have very slow access to your network computers through "My Network Places" and have already deleted the Registry entry calling for a check of Scheduled Tasks on the other network computers (documented elsewhere on this site) AND you have multiple network adaptors (i.e. a cable or DSL connection through one NIC and an internal network using a second NIC) check the following:

· Right-click on "My Network Places", go to Properties.
· Right-click on the NIC that your cable/DSL connects to, and choose Properties.
· Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click on Properties.
· Click on "Advanced", go to "WINS" tab, and chose Disable NetBios over TCP/IP.
· When you are back at your Network Connections page, right-click on the Broadband selection.
· Choose "Properties", click on the Networking tab.
· Again, choose TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS, and select "disable NetBios over TCP/IP".

Speed Up Detailed View in Explorer

If you like to view your files in Windows Explorer using the "Details" view here is a tweak to speed up the listing of file attributes:
Viewing files in Windows Explorer using the "Details" mode shows various attributes associated with each file shown. Some of these must be retrieved from the individual files when you click on the directory for viewing. For a directory with numerous and relatively large files (such as a folder in which one stores media, eg: *.mp3's, *.avi's etc.), Windows Explorer lags as it reads through each one. Here's how to disable viewing of unwanted attributes and speed up file browsing:

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to the folder which you wish to optimize.
In "Details" mode right-click the bar at the top which displays the names of the attribute columns.
Uncheck any that are unwanted/unneeded.

Explorer will apply your preferences immediately, and longs lists of unnecessary attributes will not be displayed.
Likewise, one may choose to display any information which is regarded as needed, getting more out of Explorer.

Easily Disable Messenger

Go into: C:/Program Files/Messenger. Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF". This does not slow down Outlook Express or hinder system performance.

Turn Off System Restore to Save Space

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:

Open the Control Panel.
Double-click on System.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Hit Apply.
You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.

Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure. Very Slow Boot When Networking
On some XP Pro installations, when connected to a network (peer-peer in this case), the computer boot time is over 1:40. The system seems to freeze after logging in and the desktop may not appear or will freeze for a minute. As timed with the utility, Bootvis.exe, the problem was with the driver mrxsmb.dll, adding over 67 seconds to the boot time. Turning off and restoring file and printer sharing eliminated 65 seconds from the boot time.

· Alt-click (or right-click) on Network Places > Properties.
· Alt-click on Ethernet Adapter connection > Properties.
· Un-check "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" > OK.
· Reboot.
· If you need file or printer sharing, repeat the above, re-check the box and re-boot again.

Easy Way to Adjust LargeSystemCache

Normally, the tweak I've seen asks you to go into HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and change the value to either O or 1 to the adjustment the LargeSystemCache.
However, in Windows XP, all you have to do is:

· Right-click My Computer.
· Select Properties.
· Click Advanced.
· Choose Performance.
· Click Advanced again.
· Select either Programs or System Cache under Memory Usage.

Programs = 0 for the registry tweak equivalent System Cache = 1 for the registry tweak equivalent On NT Server (in this case XP), the Large System Cache option is enabled, but disabled on Workstation. The two different settings effect how the cache manager allocates free memory. If the Large Cache option is on, the manager marks all the free memory, which isn't being used by the system and/or applications, as freely available for disk caching. · On the flip-side (with a small cache), the manager instead only sets aside 4MB of memory for disk caching in an attempt to accelerate the launch of applications. Or in a more technical approach, if enabled the system will favor system-cache working sets over process working sets (with a working set basically being the memory used by components of a process).

Stop Jerky Graphics

If you are connected to a LAN and have problems with jerky graphics, this might be the solution:

Right-click "My Computer".
Select "Manage".
Click on "Device Manager".
Double-click on your NIC under "Network Adapters".
In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab.
Select "Connection Type" and manually set the value of your NIC. (Not "Auto Sense"w hich is default.).
You should reboot.

Shutdown XP Faster

Like previous versions of windows, it takes long time to restart or shutdown windows XP when the "Exit Windows" sound is enabled. To solve this problem you must disable this
useless sound.

· Click Start button.
· Go to settings > Control Panel > Sound, Speech and Audio devices > Sounds and Audio Devices> Sounds.
· Then under program events and windows menu click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it. Now from sounds you can select, choose "none" and then click Apply and OK.

Now you should see some improvements when shutting down your system. Speeding Up Your Pentium 2 by 50% We all know that you really shouldn't try to run Windows XP on anything less that about a Pentium 3 of some sort if you are out for speedy operations and amazing reaction times, but for those of us with the good old Pentium 2's who want to see just how well we can run XP, we have to tweak as much as we can where-ever we can. A real killer to the system's performance is Windows Media Player. Although it may look desirable and fancy with it's rounded off edges and 3rd-Dimensional appearance, the truth is, it takes up a large amount of that precious processing power. All of these troubles however, lead to one thing in particular with this 'new-look' over-rated music and video player...the Visualizations. The look-great I'll admit but like a lot of software these days, it has no purpose. If you run the task manager, and click the Performance tab along the top, you'll see that when Windows Media Player is running and nothing else is active, it takes up around 50% of the processors power. Once these visualizations are turned off, it barely takes up 2-3% of the processors power, which leaves much more room for other applications to work efficiently.

The registry is the heart and soul of Microsoft Windows XP. In my other registry books, I said the same thing about the registry in every version of Windows since Microsoft Windows 95, and by the time you're finished reading this book, I hope you'll agree. The registry contains the configuration data that makes the operating system work. The registry enables developers to organize configuration data in ways that are impossible with other mechanisms, such as INI files. It's behind just about every feature in Windows XP that you think is cool. More importantly, it enables you to customize Windows XP in ways you can't through the user interface.
Windows XP and every application that runs on Microsoft's latest desktop operating system do
absolutely nothing without consulting the registry first. When you double−click a file, Windows XP consults the registry to figure out what to do with it. When you install a device, Windows XP assigns resources to the device based on information in the registry and then stores the device's configuration in the registry. When you run an application such as Microsoft Word 2002, the application looks up your preferences in the registry. If you were to monitor the registry during a normal session, you'd see the registry serves up thousands of values within minutes.
In this book, you will learn how to customize the registry, but you must also learn how to take care of the registry. You must learn how to back up the registry so you can restore it if things go awry.

You must also learn the best practices for editing the registry safely.

Oracle's PL/SQL language has several defining characteristics :

It is a highly structured, readable, and accessible language

If you are new to programming, PL/SQL is a great place to start. You will find that it is an easy language to learn, and it is rich with keywords and structure that clearly express the intent of your code. If you are experienced in other programming languages, you will very easily adapt to the new syntax.

PL/SQL is a standard and portable language for Oracle development

If you write a PL/SQL procedure or function to execute from within the Oracle database sitting on your laptop, you can move that same procedure to a database on your corporate network and execute it there without any changes (assuming compatibility of Oracle versions, of course). "Write once, run everywhere" was the mantra of PL/SQL long before Java appeared. For PL/SQL, though, "everywhere" means "everywhere there is an Oracle database."

PL/SQL is an embedded language

PL/SQL was not designed to be used as a standalone language, but instead to be invoked from within a host environment. So, for example, you can run PL/SQL programs from within the database (through, say, the SQL*Plus interface). Alternatively, you can define and execute PL/SQL programs from within an Oracle Developer form or report (this approach is called client-side PL/SQL ). You cannot, however, create a PL/SQL executable that runs all by itself.

PL/SQL is a high-performance, highly integrated database language

These days, you have a number of choices when it comes to writing software to run against the Oracle database. You can use Java and JDBC; you can use Visual Basic and ODBC; you can go with Delphi, C++, and so on. You will find, however, that it is easier to write highly efficient code to access the Oracle database in PL/SQL than it is in any other language. In particular, Oracle offers certain PL/SQL-specific enhancements such as the FORALL statement that can improve database performance by an order of magnitude or more.

PHP Enterprise

When I started programming PHP professionally in 1999, PHP was just starting its emergence as more than a niche scripting language for hobbyists. That was the time of PHP 4, and the first Zend Engine had made PHP faster and more stable. PHP deployment was also increasing exponentially, but it was still a hard sell to use PHP for large commercial Web sites. This difficulty originated mainly from two sources:

Perl/ColdFusion/other-scripting-language developers who refused to update their understanding of PHP's capabilities from when it was still a nascent language.

Java developers who wanted large and complete frameworks, robust object-oriented support, static typing, and other "enterprise" features.

Neither of those arguments holds water any longer. PHP is no longer a glue-language used by small-time enthusiasts; it has become a powerful scripting language whose design makes it ideal for tackling problems in the Web domain.

A programming language needs to meet the following six criteria to be usable in business-critical applications:

Fast prototyping and implementation

Support for modern programming paradigms

Scalability

Performance

Interoperability

Extensibility

The first criterionfast prototypinghas been a strength of PHP since its inception. A critical difference between Web development and shrink-wrapped software development is that in the Web there is almost no cost to shipping a product. In shipped software products, however, even a minor error means that you have burned thousands of CDs with buggy code. Fixing that error involves communicating with all the users that a bug fix exists and then getting them to download and apply the fix. In the Web, when you fix an error, as soon as a user reloads the page, his or her experience is fixed. This allows Web applications to be developed using a highly agile, release-often engineering methodology.

Scripting languages in general are great for agile products because they allow you to quickly develop and test new ideas without having to go through the whole compile, link, test, debug cycle. PHP is particularly good for this because it has such a low learning curve that it is easy to bring new developers on with minimal previous experience.

PHP 5 has fully embraced the rest of these ideas as well. As you will see in this book, PHP's new object model provides robust and standard object-oriented support. PHP is fast and scalable, both through programming strategies you can apply in PHP and because it is simple to reimplement critical portions of business logic in low-level languages. PHP provides a vast number of extensions for interoperating with other servicesfrom database servers to SOAP. Finally, PHP possesses the most critical hallmark of a language: It is easily extensible. If the language does not provide a feature or facility you need, you can add that support.

Network Access

One of the primary reasons you need to implement proper SQL code is network access. SQL database applications are inherently distributed between two or more computers. Currently, it is pretty rare to have a single user SQL database where the user works on the same computer as the data is located on. While this may not always be true (with SQL Server 2000 having its Microsoft Data Engine and CE versions to enable single user systems) the focus of our book will be on multi-user systems that involve two or more computers. However, all examples in the book can be implemented and tested on any edition of SQL Server.
To implement the looping example in the previous section, every row in the innerTable and outerTable would have to be retrieved over a network connection to the client. If the table was large, this would likely be a very slow operation, even on a relatively fast network.
The efficiency gained by utilizing the processor resources of the server allows multiple users to access the data quicker than if the work was performed on the client machines, not to mention that the amount of data that must be shuffled across the network will be smaller, minimizing the effect of network access speed. Although well designed systems will centralize processing, you often find that poorly performing applications are attempting to do the work that the database engine was designed to do.

Installing PHP

The next step is to install PHP. At the time of this writing, PHP 5.0 has just been released, with numerous improvements over the previous version; however, PHP 4.3 has become well-established as the version of choice due to its track record of stability and performance. The procedures for installing these two versions are nearly identical. Although I’ll focus primarily on installing PHP 5.0 in these pages, I’ll note any significant differences if you happen to be working with PHP 4.3. All of the code in this book will work with both versions of PHP. Download PHP for free from http://www.php.net/downloads.php. You’ll want the PHP 5.x zip package under Windows Binaries; avoid the installer version if you can. PHP was designed to run as a plug-in for existing Web server software such as Internet Information Services, Apache, Sambar or OmniHTTPD. To test dynamic Web pages with PHP, you’ll need to equip your own computer with Web server software, so that PHP has something to plug into.
if you have Windows 2000, XP Professional 3 , or Server 2003, then install IIS (if it’s not already on your system): open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components, and select Internet Information Services (IIS) from the list of components. If you’re not lucky enough to have IIS at your dis-posal, 4 you can use a free, third-party Web server like Apache instead. I’ll give instructions for both options in detail.

First, whether or not you have IIS, complete these steps:

Unzip the file you downloaded from the PHP Website into a directory of your choice. I recommend C:\PHP and will refer to this directory from this point onward, but feel free to choose another directory if you like.
Find the file called php5ts.dll in the PHP folder and copy it to the system32 subfolder of your Windows folder (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32).
Find the file called php.ini-dist in the PHP folder and copy it to your Windows folder. Once it’s there, rename it php.ini.
Open the php.ini file in your favorite text editor (use WordPad if Notepad doesn’t display the file properly). It’s a large file with a lot of confusing op-tions, but look for a line that begins with extension_dir, and set it so that it points to the ext subfolder of your PHP folder: extension_dir = "C:\PHP\ext" A little further down, you’ll see a bunch of lines beginning with ;extension=.
These are optional extensions, disabled by default. We want to enable the MySQL extension so that PHP can communicate with MySQL. To do this, remove the semicolon from the start of the php_mysql.dll line: extension=php_mysql.dll Even further down, look for a line that starts with session.save_path and set it to your Windows TEMP folder: session.save_path = "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" Save the changes you made and close your text editor.

Installing MySQL

As I mentioned above, MySQL may be downloaded free of charge. Simply proceed to http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/ and choose the recommended stable release (as of this writing, it is MySQL 4.0). On the MySQL 4.0 download page, under the heading Windows downloads, select and download the release that includes the installer. After downloading the file (it’s about 21MB as of this writing), unzip it and run the setup.exe program contained therein. Once installed, MySQL is ready to roll (barring a couple of configuration tasks that we’ll look at shortly), except for one minor issue that only affects you if you’re running Windows NT, 2000, XP, or Server 2003. If you use any of those operating systems, you need to create a file called my.cnf in the root of your C:
drive to indicate where you have installed MySQL. To create this file, simply open Notepad and type these three lines:

[mysqld]
basedir = c:/mysql/
datadir = c:/mysql/data/

If you installed MySQL into a directory other than C:\mysql, replace both occur-rences of c:/mysql in the above with the path to which you installed. Notice the use of forward slashes (/) instead of the usual backslashes (\) in the paths. For instance, on my system I edited the file to read as follows:

[mysqld]
basedir = d:/Program Files/MySQL/
datadir = d:/Program Files/MySQL/data/

Save the file as my.cnf in the root directory of C: drive.
if you don’t like the idea of a MySQL configuration file sitting in the root of your C: drive, instead, you can name it my.ini and put it in your Windows dir-ectory (e.g. C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT if Windows is installed on drive C:). MySQL will now run on your Windows NT, 2000, XP, or Server 2003 system! If you’re using Windows 95, 98, or ME, this step is not necessary—MySQL will run just fine as installed.
Just like your Web server, MySQL is a program that should be run in the back-ground so that it may respond to requests for information at any time. The server program may be found in the bin subfolder of the folder into which you installed MySQL. However, to complicate matters, several versions of the MySQL server are available:

mysqld.exe

This is the basic version of MySQL if you run Win-dows 95, 98, or ME. It includes support for all the advanced features, and includes debug code to provide additional information in the case of a crash (if your system is set up to debug programs). As a result of this code, however, the server might run a little slow, and
generally I’ve found that MySQL is so stable that crashes aren’t really a concern.

ysqld-opt.exe

This version of the server lacks a few of the advanced features of the basic server, and does not include the debug code. It’s optimized to run quickly on today’s processors. For beginners, the advanced features are not a big concern. You certainly won’t be using them while you complete the tasks in this book. This is the version of choice for beginners unning Windows 95, 98, or ME.

mysqld-nt.exe

This version of the server is compiled and optimized like mysqld-opt, but is designed to run under Win- dows NT, 2000, XP, or Server 2003 as a service. If you’re using any of those operating systems, this is probably the server for you
mysqld-max.exe
This version is like mysqld-opt.exe, but contains ad- vanced features that support transactions.
mysqld-max-nt.exe
This version’s similar to mysqld-nt.exe, in that it will run as a Windows service, but it has the same ad- vanced features as mysqld-max.exe.

All these versions were installed for you in the bin directory. If you’re running on Win9x/ME, I recommend you stick with mysql-opt for now—move to mysqld-max if you ever need the advanced features. On WinNT/2000/XP/2003, mysqld-nt is my recommendation. Upgrade to mysqld-max-nt when you need more ad- vanced features.
Starting MySQL is also a little different under WinNT/2000/XP/2003, but this time let’s begin with the procedure for Win9x/ME. Open an MS-DOS Command Prompt,proceed to the MySQL bin directory, and run your chosen server pro-gram:
C:\mysql\bin>mysqld-opt
Don’t be surprised when you receive another command prompt. This commandlaunches the server program so that it runs in the background, even after you close the command prompt. If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del to pull up the task list, you should see the MySQL server listed as one of the tasks that’s active on your sys-tem.
To ensure that the server is started whenever Windows starts, you might want to create a shortcut to the program and put it in your Startup folder. This is just like creating a shortcut to any other program on your system. On WinNT/2000/XP/2003, you must install MySQL as a system service. Fortu-nately, this is very easy to do. Simply open a Command Prompt (under Accessories in the Start Menu) and run your chosen server program with the --install op-tion:

C:\mysql\bin>mysqld-nt --install
Service successfully installed.

This will install MySQL as a service that will be started the next time you reboot Windows. To start MySQL manually without having to reboot, just type this command (which can be run from any directory):

C:\>net start mysql
The MySQL service is starting.
The MySQL service was started successfully.

To verify that the MySQL server is running properly, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and open the Task List. If all is well, the server program should be listed on the Processes tab.
